R. SCOTT ADAMS & JOE BRETT REYNOLDS
(OKC) traveled down south to the great city of Altus where the State had accused the client of the dastardly crime of shooting w/intent to kill. According to the excellent newspaper article about the case in the Altus Times, the State apparently relied upon a succession of shackled, jail-house snitches for the bulk of its case. The six men and six women jury returned the verdict of NOT GUILTY after only about an hour and a half of deliberation(!) The article stated that Adams, in commenting about one of the snitches' testimony and the plea agreement he made with the State, stated, "I have never in my entire career ever seen such a maggot." (!!) "To think that he's going to be out on the streets makes me want to puke." Said Adams. The article reported Adams as "visibly angry" during his closing argument and in his attack upon the credibility of the State's witnesses. It's not often the State parades before the jury witnesses who are even worse than your client! Scott told me that client did not testify and he presented only one witness in the defense case---client's eighteen-year-old fiancee who said client was with her when the event occurred. State offered life. Rejected(!) Did client walk out? Well, he wanted to, but there is the small matter of the pending First Degree Murder charge against him and the fact that the State is seeking the death penalty; but from the tone of the article it sounds like the State's case is built upon the same shifting sand and I sense perhaps another Victory story in the works. I spoke to Scott about the case and he said that he was not joking when he said it was the worst case he has ever seen in his career and the Murder I case is just about as bad. Also, Scott stated that Judge Darby did a first-rate job and was very fair with his rulings (even when he ruled against the accused it was fair); he let Scott try his case and Scott described him as a "wonderful trial judge." Outstanding job, Scott!
